1903

“Local News”

Sheriff James Munden went to Livingston Thursday afternoon to witness the hanging of Martin Zidmair, who was condemned to death for the killing of Reider. He did not witness the hanging, however, as the condemned man cheated the gallows by hanging himself in his cell the night before with a strap.

Those rolling over 200 at the bowling alley this month so far are: Dan McLean, 209; Bob Doggett, 204; Walter Crane, 203.

F.T. McCormick and wife, accompanied by Shelby McKay and Ralph Gilham, departed Thursday morning for the mountains, where they are camping for a few days.

Professor Wilson of Placer was in town Tuesday.

Dr. J.L. Belcher went to Winston Saturday by train on professional business.

A.J. Simpson, who has been in the National Park for the past two months, driving a tourist car, returned to Townsend Saturday.

1925

“Local News”

The music for the dance at West’s Pavilion Saturday night, Sept. 5th, will be furnished by Ed and Bill Daniels and Roiley Redd.

Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Mitchell, Mrs. W.C. Whaley, and Mrs. W.W. Harvey spent several days at the Harvey camp on Deep Creek.

John Schreiner and Mrs. Clark, formerly Zelda Schreiner, are in Townsend with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Schreiner, at present. Mrs. Fred DeWolfe and children and Miss Wilda Schreiner left Boston on Tuesday by auto for Townsend.

Mrs. A.C. Carson and daughters, Frances and Helen, returned to their home in Townsend on Thursday of last week after spending several weeks in the east, Miss Frances attending the University of Chicago and Mrs. Carson and Helen visiting Mrs. Frannie Crosby in Painsville, Michigan.

Adair McCarthy departed for Washington, D.C., the fore part of the week after spending his vacation with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. D.D. McCarthy in Townsend.

Mr. and Mrs. James E. Ward returned to Townsend last Saturday after a very pleasant vacation spent at Missoula, Spokane, and Lolo Hot Springs.

1970

“Local News”

Miss Joan Huth, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Heinie Huth, left Sunday for Billings where she is enrolled at Eastern Montana College for the fall quarter.

Thelma J. Lapeyre and Grace Walker of Portland, Ore., sisters of the last resident of Diamond City, were here doing annual representation work on Robbie’s claims. They returned to Portland Wednesday after a 10-day stay.

Mr. and Mrs. Arnie Holzwarth and sons were in Big Fork last week visiting her mother, Mrs. Noel Dolven and Mr. Dolven. They returned Thursday evening.

Mr. and Mrs. Bob Brandon of Lancaster, Mo. Visited briefly Friday morning with the George and Jerry Brammer families and with Mr. and Mrs. John Jepson.

Will Cotter of Missoula was in town last week visiting old friends. Mr. Cotter is a former resident of Canton.

“East of Townsend”

Mr. and Mrs. Harold Marks visited Sunday in Butte at the home of their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Rick Foote.

Mr. and Mrs. Charles Plymale and Francie attended a family reunion Sunday at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Tony Gliko and family at Belt.

Barb Harris spent Friday night with Karen and Vicki Wambolt.

Mrs. George Collins and children spent from Thursday to Monday in Fort Benton. Sunday they attended the wedding of Norma Collins to Richard Pruett.

Mrs. Ed Neild and Edwina attended the Ringling Bros. Circus in Butte Tuesday evening.

Mr. and Mrs. Fred Meyer, Ann and Beth spent last week vacationing through the state. They stopped in Stevensville to visit at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Meyer and family.

Mr. and Mrs. Harry Cartwright and family attended the circus in Butte Wednesday and the Little Britches Rodeo in East Helena Saturday.

Jeff and Denise White participated in the Little Britches Rodeo in East Helena Saturday.
