The Traveling Diners recently went to Great Falls for a weekend of museums and dining – and we were not disappointed! The Paris Gibson Center and the C. M. Russell Museum were great to visit.
We stayed at the Hotel Arvon, an historic building in downtown Great Falls. The hotel is a very comfortable and quaint inn doubling as an art gallery. We spent quite a bit of time viewing the art adorning the 3 floors of the hotel. The hotel is connected to the Celtic Cowboy pub and restaurant.
We enjoyed a quick snack of Scotch Eggs shortly after checking into the hotel. Later that evening, we returned for dinner. On Friday night the Celtic Cowboy has live music. The meals were excellent: we had “Bangers and Mash” and a “Crispy Fish Burrito”.
The only complaint we have about the Celtic Cowboy is that the menus online and those posted in the hotel elevator feature a weekend brunch. We checked both Saturday and Sunday and there was no brunch. In addition, the Hotel Arvon provides a complimentary continental breakfast at the Cowboy Celtic. The complimentary breakfast was negligible and utterly forgettable.
Saturday morning, we were getting ready for the day when we happened to look out the window and saw a lot of foot traffic. It turns out the Great Falls Farmers Market was right across the street from the hotel. With over 100 vendors at the Farmers Market, we spent quite a bit of our Saturday morning cruising the Market.
For lunch, we went to “Clark and Louies,” a small restaurant next to the famous Sip’n’Dip lounge. Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, Clark and Louies serves excellent food, but you had better come with a huge appetite – there are no small meals. We had Huevos Rancheros (a much different version, but very good) and a Beef Cobb Salad. Both were very good, but we could only eat half the meal.
The main reason that we decided to go to Great Falls for the weekend was to try a restaurant named “Dante’s Creative Cuisine”. We had passed the restaurant many times on day trips to Great Falls. It’s located in the historic Ironworks building and just looked interesting.
We were not disappointed at Dante’s. The food was truly outstanding and the ambiance in the restaurant was wonderful. Having had a huge lunch, we did not order any appetizers and went straight to the entrees. We ordered a 12 oz. ribeye steak that I am pretty sure was 16 ounces and a seafood linguine featuring shrimp, scallops, and crab in an alfredo sauce. Both meals were cooked to perfection. We ended up taking home half of both meals and they were as good the next day as they were at the restaurant.
We knew we wanted to try dessert (there was a dessert tray by the reception desk) and were not disappointed. The Crème Brûlée had a citrusy orange background flavor that was unexpected and truly wonderful. The other dessert was an excellent raspberry cheesecake. We shared both desserts.
We plan to go back to Dante’s Creative Cuisine often!
